What is the MSC?

The MSC is the Mathematics Subject Classification agreed by and used by Mathematical Reviews (MR) and Zentralblatt für Mathematik (Zbl). It is a traditional three-level classification tree with 63 first-level nodes, over 400 second-level nodes and over 5000 leaf nodes.

What is the MSCWiki?

The MSCWiki is a collection of pages organized as a wiki which provided a copy of the MSC to be revised into a new version to be called MSC2010. The pages were collaboratively editable by the editors of Mathematical Reviews and Zentralblatt für Mathematik. We started with the current version, as of 2007, of the previous revision, MSC 2000.

What is MSC2000?

MSC2000 is the current version of the MSC, as of July 2007, that was prepared by the editorial offices of MR and Zbl in 1998, and deployed by those two organizations for their publications beginning with the year 2000. There have been some minor corrections made since then, but it still has typos in it. The lead time between the finishing of a revision of the MSC and its deployment in publication is required so as to put this tool into the MR and Zbl publication processes, which are complex.

What is the timetable for making MSC2010?

  1. 2007 Aug-Sep: the MR and Zbl editors prepare a first draft based on their own experience and the suggestion that have been collected and recorded under MSC2010.org.
  2. 2007 Oct-Dec: further in-house processing of this first draft takes place so that a First Public Draft can be released
  3. 2008 Jan: First Public Working Draft released for comment and publicized at AMS/MAA/SIAM Joint Winter Meetings in San Diego and elsewhere
  4. 2008 Jan-Jun: public comments incorporated into revision or otherwise replied to
  5. 2008 March end: Second Public Working Draft

  7. 2009 Jan: final Public Draft of MSC2010 circulated at Joint Winter Mathematics Meetings in Washington, D. C.
