Conversion of codes

As the MSC (Mathematics Subject Classification) has evolved over the years some classification codes have been newly introduced from time to time, and some have been dropped or deprecated, or had their descriptions modified. The usage of the MSC at ZBMATH (earlier Zentralblatt für Mathematik) and Mathematical Reviews (now online as MathSciNet) has differed slightly. Mathematical Reviews and MathSciNet do not change the MSC codes applied to any item once it is finally entered into their database. ZBMATH decided in 2000 to update all the MSC codes on their items to MSC2000, and has done similarly to update everything to MSC2010 now that it is the current MSC. To help those who come across older MSC codes, and to provide clarity over how the MSC has changed we provide below links to some conversion tables.

Conversion tables between the 2010 and 2000 versions of the Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC)

Items appearing in the 2010a (January) and later issues of Mathematical Reviews and in the 2010:01 and later issues of Current Mathematical Publications, and in the corresponding publications of ZBMATH, are classified using [MSC2010] which is a revision of the [MSC2000]. The great majority of the over 5000 classification codes in the MSC2000 remain valid in MSC2010. However, some classification codes from the MSC2000 do not appear in MSC2010 and there are more new classification codes in MSC2010.

To help users of the MSC, the editors of Mathematical Reviews and ZBMATH (earlier Zentralblatt für Mathematik) constructed conversion tables. One table gives for each MSC2010 code that does not appear in MSC2000 the code(s) in MSC2000 that would most likely have been used for items that can now be classified using the new code. The other table gives for each discontinued code in MSC2000 the codes in the MSC2010 that are most likely to be used for items that might have earlier been classified using the old code.

Conversion tables between the 2000 and 1991 versions of the Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC)

Items appearing in the 2000a (January) and later issues of Mathematical Reviews and in the 2000:01 and later issues of Current Mathematical Publications are classified using MSC2000, which is a revision of the 1991 MSC. The great majority of the over 5000 classification codes in the 1991 MSC remain valid in MSC2000. However, over 400 classification codes from the 1991 MSC do not appear in MSC2000 and there are over 1000 new classification codes in MSC2000.

To help users of the MSC, the editors of Mathematical Reviews have constructed conversion tables. One table gives for each 1991 code that does not appear in MSC2000 the code(s) in MSC2000 that are most likely to be used for items that would previously have been classified using the code that is now invalid. The other table gives for each new code in MSC2000 the codes in the 1991 MSC that are most likely to have been used earlier for items classified using the new code. The description associated with each code can be found by clicking on 1991 MSC or MSC2000, as appropriate.
